Spin-off VSM Solar

In order to establish solar cooling of buildings as an energy-efficient and electricity saving technology in the Indian market, Fraunhofer UMSICHT and its cooperation partner »VSM Energy« founded the spin-off company VSM Solar Private Limited.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT offers expertise in the field of solar thermally driven steam jet ejectors and solar thermally driven absorption chillers. Both types of machines can be powered by solar thermal heat as well as by waste heat. The big advantages of solar-assisted air-conditioning of buildings lie in their relief of the grid load and the reduction of CO2 emission. In addition, the abundant solar energy in India provides high potential for energy supply. The Indian cooperation partner offers extensive know-how of the Indian market including potential customers as well as suppliers.

The spin-off is going to start with the erection of a complete new office and production building with integrated solar cooling in an industrial area of Bangalore. Fraunhofer UMSICHT is in charge of the planning, the erection and the commissioning of the solar cooling plant, and for the instruction and advanced training of the employees. In a following step, the technology of solar cooling particularly for office buildings and complexes is intended to be brought to the market so that later on new plants for solar cooling can be built. During this time the main concept as well as single components will steadily be optimized in close teamwork.

India is the strongest expanding economy after China worldwide with an expansion rate of 7.2 percent in the years 2009/2010. The energy demand will rise in the following years due to the economic growth rate of about 8 percent per year. The Indian government plans to open the energy infrastructure for foreign investors in order to significantly increase the percentage of renewable resources within the energy mix.
